Hebrews 7:26–27

For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; who doesn’t need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself.

Reflection

Old priests were weak and sinful men. Every day, they had to bring animal sacrifices for their own sins before they could help the people.

But Jesus is holy, innocent, and pure. He never had any sin of his own. He did not need to offer animals day after day. Instead, he offered himself on the cross “once for all.” Because he is the sinless Son of God, his one sacrifice was so powerful that it never needs to be done again.

The altar of the old days was a calendar. The cross is a finished sentence.

Theology

Holy enough to offer himself

He is the priest who fitted us: holy, guiltless, undefiled. He needed no offering for himself, so he could offer himself for us. Once for all means the work is not waiting on your next apology to become effective. It is done.

Daily life

Do not add your pain to his finished gift

We often act like we must punish ourselves every time we make a mistake to make God happy again. Jesus finished the work once for all time; you do not need to add your own pain to his finished gift. Confess, yes. Then stop rehearsing a second payment he did not ask for.

Prayer

Holy Lord, thank you for giving yourself on the cross for me. Thank you that your one sacrifice was enough to clean away all my sins forever. Amen.
