Once for All

Hebrews 7:26–27 · Hebrews 10:11–14

Old priests offered again tomorrow because yesterday’s blood could not finish the job. Jesus offered himself once. It is enough.

The old high priest had to offer for his own sins before he could help anyone else. He was a sinner in holy clothes. Animals died every day because none of them could take sin away. The altar was a schedule, not a finish line.

Jesus is the priest we needed: holy, guiltless, undefiled, set apart from sinners, higher than the heavens. He had no sin of his own to cover. So he did not bring a goat. He brought himself.

“Once for all.” The Greek is a hammer: ephapax. Not once-to-start-us-off. Once, and the thing is done. Hebrews 10 will say he sat down. Priests on duty did not sit. Sitting means the work is finished.

That is why punishing yourself to get God back on side is a kind of unbelief. It treats the cross as a down payment. It is not. You do not add your pain to his. You receive a finished gift.

Repentance is still real. Confession is still real. But they are walks back into a room that is already paid for, not attempts to reopen a sacrifice God has closed.
