Hebrews 7:20–21
Inasmuch as he was not made priest without the taking of an oath (for they indeed have been made priests without an oath), but he with an oath by him that says of him, “The Lord swore and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.’”
Reflection
Long ago, earthly priests took their job simply because they were born into the tribe of Levi. God did not make an oath when they became priests.
But when God made Jesus our High Priest, he spoke an oath. God said: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’”
When God makes an oath, it means the promise will never break. God will never change his mind about Jesus, and he will never change his mind about saving you through Jesus.
This is where the week begins: not with your grip on God, but with God’s sworn grip on his Priest — and, in him, on you.

Theology
God bound himself so you can rest
Levi’s sons became priests by birth. Jesus became Priest by an oath God will not take back. Psalm 110 is not a slogan. It is the Father putting his name on the Son’s forever-office. If that oath holds, your salvation is not a mood God might get over.
Daily life
When you fail, remember who swore
We often worry that God will get tired of us and turn away when we fail. Your place with God is safe because God made a permanent promise through Jesus that can never change. Today, when shame rises, say the oath out loud: he will not change his mind.

The Oath God Will Not Take Back
Hebrews 7:20–21 · Psalm 110:4
Levitical priests were born into a job. Jesus was sworn into a priesthood God refuses to unsay.
TheologyA Priest Who Never Dies
Hebrews 7:23–24
Death used to be the limit of every helper. Jesus’ priesthood cannot be interrupted, because he cannot be.
Prayer
Dear God, thank you for your promise that never changes. When I feel weak and afraid, help me remember that you will never turn away from me. Amen.
