The Oath God Will Not Take Back
Hebrews 7:20–21 · Psalm 110:4
Levitical priests were born into a job. Jesus was sworn into a priesthood God refuses to unsay.
Ordinary priests in Israel took office by family line. No oath. The son of Aaron became a priest because he was born to it. Hebrews says that is not how Jesus became High Priest.
God spoke an oath: “The Lord swore and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.’” That line is Psalm 110:4. It is God putting his own name on the line about the Son.
An oath is not extra decoration. In the Bible, God swears when he wants his people to stop trembling. He did it for Abraham. He does it here for you. The point is not that God was otherwise untrustworthy. The point is that your nervous heart needs to hear: this will not move.
God will not wake up tired of Jesus. He will not demote him. He will not replace him with a better priest. And because your salvation is located in that priesthood, God will not change his mind about keeping the people Jesus brings.
The fear underneath so much Christian exhaustion is this: he will get tired of me. Hebrews answers with a stronger sentence: God has sworn not to get tired of his Priest. Your place is as stable as that oath.
