Ecclesiastes 4:7–8 · Luke 12:15
Then I returned and saw vanity under the sun. There is one who is alone, and he has neither son nor brother. There is no end to all of his labor, neither are his eyes satisfied with wealth. “For whom then do I labor, and deprive my soul of enjoyment?” This also is vanity. Yes, it is a miserable business. He said to them, “Beware! Keep yourselves from covetousness, for a man’s life doesn’t consist of the abundance of the things which he possesses.”
Reflection
The Preacher tells of a man who worked day and night without stopping. He gathered much money and gold. But he had no son, no brother, and no friend. He never stopped to ask: “For whom am I working so hard?” He won the race for riches, but he was all alone. Money cannot talk to you when you are sad. A big bank account cannot hold your hand when you are sick. Hard work without love and friendship is an empty life.
