John 1:1–3, 14 · 2 Corinthians 8:9
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him. Without him, nothing was made that has been made. The Word became flesh and lived among us. We saw his glory, such glory as of the one and only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that you through his poverty might become rich.
Reflection
If the Bible ended with Ecclesiastes 2, we would only have despair. But God did not leave us in the vapor. Before time began, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit lived in perfect, happy unity. They saw us choking on the dust of our empty work.
By the unified agreement of the Godhead, Jesus did not stay far away above the sun. The eternal Word stepped right into our world. The Preacher built houses for himself, but Jesus gave His life on a cross to build His church. He was rich, yet He became poor to save us.
