Ecclesiastes 1:1–3

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem: “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” What does man gain from all his labor in which he labors under the sun?

Reflection

The Preacher in Ecclesiastes looks at all human labour and says: “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity”. In the original Hebrew language, the word for vanity is hebel. It means a mist, a vapour, or a breath.

Think of walking outside on a freezing morning and breathing out. You see your breath for a second, but when you try to grab it in your hand, there is nothing there. That is what life is like when we live only for things under the sun. We work hard to grab onto money, jobs, and praise, but they vanish like smoke.

Theology

The Hope

God shows us that earthly things are a vapor so we will stop trying to make them our savior.

Daily life

The Heart

We often think that getting the next big thing will finally fix the empty feeling inside our souls.

Prayer

Dear God, forgive me for chasing the wind. Teach my heart to stop holding onto the mist of this world, and help me seek my life in You today. Amen.
