Matthew 6:7–8 · Romans 8:34

In praying, don't use vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do; for they think that they will be heard for their much speaking. Therefore don't be like them, for your Father knows what things you need, before you ask him. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, yes rather, who was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Reflection

Many religions teach that you must repeat long prayers and shout to get God's attention. But Jesus said: do not heap up empty words like the Gentiles do, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. The Gospel gives us great joy because we do not have to talk our way into God's good graces. You are not saved by the length of your prayers or the beauty of your speech. You are saved because Jesus died for you and rose from the grave. God already knows your needs, and He already loves you in Christ. You can come to Him in quiet peace.

Daily life

The Heart

We get tired when we think our prayers must be long and perfect to make God hear us.

Father in heaven, thank You that You know my needs before I ask. Help me rest in Your grace and pray with simple, quiet faith today. Amen.
