Isaiah 53:7 · 1 Peter 2:22–24

He was oppressed, yet when he was afflicted he didn't open his mouth. As a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and as a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he didn't open his mouth. He did not sin, "neither was deceit found in his mouth." When he was cursed, he didn't curse back. When he suffered, he didn't threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness. By his wounds you were healed.

Reflection

If the Bible only told us to be silent before God's judgment, we would be full of fear. But look at Jesus. Jesus is the eternal Word of God who made the heavens and the earth. Yet, when He was arrested and falsely accused by evil men, He did not shout or argue. Like a lamb led to the slaughter, He opened not His mouth. Jesus chose to be silent before human judges so that our sins could be forgiven. On the cross, He took the penalty for all our proud, foolish words. He was silent in death so that we could be welcomed into the family of God.

Theology

The Hope

Jesus was silent in our place on the cross, taking away our guilt and opening the way to heaven.

Daily life

The Heart

We always want to defend ourselves and shout when people treat us unfairly.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for standing silent like a lamb before Your shearers. Thank You for taking the punishment for my sins so I can draw near to God. Amen.
