Read Ecclesiastes 4:1–12 aloud before working the sections. Then pray.

Walking the text

The Vapor of Isolation

The author looks at society. The author sees tears. People experience 'ashuqim. The word translates to oppressions. People lack nacham. The word translates to comfort. People work with 'amal. The word translates to toil. People work from qin'ah. The word translates to envy. Envy turns people into adversaries. Success leaves people without friends. Success without friends functions as hebel. The word translates to vapor.

Questions for reflection • Do you work from rivalry? • How does rivalry destroy friendships?

The Rope of Threads

The author states truths of partnership. Partners gain rewards for toil. Partners lift up friends who fall. Partners keep friends from freezing. Partners defend friends from attacks. The author writes about hut hammeshullash. The phrase translates to a rope of threads, a threefold cord. Ropes of threads bear weight without snapping. People try to live as atoms. Atoms bounce in voids. God designs people as threads for tapestries.

Questions for reflection • Do you live as an atom or a thread? • Who lifts you up when you fall?

The Friend on the Cross

The Trinity lives in community. Jesus chose disciples for fellowship. Jesus experienced isolation on the cross. Jesus became an outcast. The Father turned away from the Son. Jesus suffered isolation so believers receive inclusion. Jesus functions as the thread of grace. Jesus pays rewards. Jesus lifts up believers. Jesus brings the warmth of the Pneuma. The word translates to Spirit.

Questions for reflection • Jesus suffered isolation. Does the truth of the cross change prayers? • Jesus brings warmth. How can you rest in the warmth of Jesus today?

Action for Life

God creates the Church. God unites believers in koinonia. The word translates to fellowship. Believers must invite people into work. People write dissertations with cohorts. People write code of software with peers. People scout lots in Semenyih to open restaurants with partners. People write books with Wrutheran Sinnadurai. Partners halve burdens. Partners double joy. Believers must drop defences. Believers must ask for help. People without faith trust willpower. Willpower snaps. People must run to Jesus.

Questions for reflection • Do you hide burdens from people in church? • How can you invite people into work this week?

Prayer to close

God of heaven, we bow before You. We thank You for Jesus. Jesus suffered isolation to build the Church. Deliver us from rivalry. Deliver us from independence. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.
