Ecclesiastes 3:2–8
a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; a time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; a time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace.
Reflection
The Preacher gives a poem of fourteen pairs of opposites to show the whole of life. There is a time to be born, and a time to die. There is a time to weep, and a time to laugh. There is a time to tear down, and a time to build up. A farmer cannot harvest in the week he feels bored; the fruit has its own week. In our homes, one year brings laughter, and another year brings an empty chair. You do not write the musical score of life, and you do not set the speed. God does. That is not cruelty; it is God caring for a broken world.
Theology
The Hope
God rules over both the good days and the hard days, and He does not abandon you in the dark.
Daily life
The Heart
We want only laughter and sunshine, and we fear the days of tears and loss.
Prayer
Lord God, You set the times to plant and the times to weep. Give me peace when the season turns hard, knowing that You are with me. Amen.
