Saved to the Uttermost
Hebrews 7:25
Uttermost means no sin too deep and no year too late. Completely, and for good.
“He is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him.” The phrase eis to panteles stretches in two directions.
Completely — the whole person, the whole record, the sin you have named and the sin you still hide. There is no back room of your life Jesus cannot enter, and no stain he is not able to clean.
Forever — the salvation does not have an expiry. He does not get you started and then hand you back to yourself. Because he always lives, the saving does not run out.
The condition is not “those who have finally become impressive.” It is “those who draw near to God through him.” Nearness is allowed because of the Priest, not because of a streak of good days.
Two lies die here. One: my past is too much. If uttermost has a meaning, it includes that. Two: I will need a second conversion later when I really mess up. He saves to the uttermost, not to the moderately-bad.
Draw near. That is the invitation hiding inside the doctrine.
